ALLERGIC RHINITIS
Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air, causing inflammation of the nasal passages. It is commonly known as hay fever, although it can occur year-round (perennial) or seasonally.
Types
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis:
- Triggered by allergens like pollen during certain seasons (e.g., spring, summer, or fall).
- Common allergens: Tree pollen, grass pollen, and weed pollen.
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis:
- Occurs year-round.
- Common allergens: Dust mites, pet dander, mold, and cockroach droppings.
Symptoms
Nasal Symptoms:
- Sneezing.
- Runny nose (rhinorrhea).
- Nasal congestion or blockage.
- Itchy nose.
Other Symptoms:
- Itchy, watery, or red eyes (allergic conjunctivitis).
- Postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat).
- Throat irritation or itchiness.
- Fatigue (from poor sleep due to nasal congestion).
Causes
Allergic rhinitis is caused by an exaggerated immune response to airborne allergens. Common allergens include:
- Pollen: From trees, grasses, and weeds.
- Dust Mites: Microscopic organisms found in bedding and upholstery.
- Animal Dander: Proteins in the skin flakes, saliva, or urine of pets.
- Mold Spores: Found in damp environments.
- Cockroach Droppings: A common indoor allergen.
Risk Factors
- Family history of allergies or asthma.
- Personal history of eczema or other allergic conditions.
- Living in areas with high exposure to allergens.
Diagnosis
History and Symptoms:
- Persistent or recurrent symptoms triggered by exposure to allergens.
Physical Examination:
- Swollen or pale nasal passages.
- Dark circles under the eyes ("allergic shiners").
- Crease across the nose from frequent rubbing ("allergic salute").
Allergy Testing:
- Skin Prick Test: Identifies specific allergens by exposing the skin to small amounts of allergens.
- Blood Tests: Measures specific IgE antibodies to allergens.
Treatment
1. Avoidance of Allergens
- Stay indoors during high pollen seasons, especially in the morning.
- Use air purifiers or HEPA filters.
- Keep windows closed and use air conditioning.
- Wash bedding and vacuum frequently to reduce dust mites.
- Bathe pets regularly and limit their access to bedrooms.
2. Medications
- Scope of Homoeopathy in all allergic disorders is very high. It is harmless in any conditions at any stages. Allergic rhinitis can be treated successfully with Homoeopathic medicines. None of the Homoeopathic medicines have been banned or caused any side effects till date.
Home Remedies and Lifestyle Changes
- Use saline nasal sprays or rinses to clear nasal passages.
- Wear sunglasses and a hat to reduce pollen exposure outdoors.
- Shower after outdoor activities to remove allergens from skin and hair.
Complications
- Sinusitis (inflammation or infection of the sinuses).
- Poor sleep leading to fatigue and reduced quality of life.
- Increased risk of asthma or worsening asthma symptoms.
- Ear infections (in children).
Prognosis
With proper management, allergic rhinitis symptoms can be significantly reduced, improving overall quality of life.
