Viral fever refers to a group of illnesses caused by viral infections that typically result in an elevated body temperature (fever). These fevers are common and can affect people of all ages. The term encompasses various viral illnesses, including those caused by influenza, dengue, chikungunya, or respiratory viruses.

Causes

  • Respiratory Viruses: Influenza, rhinovirus, adenovirus.
  • Gastrointestinal Viruses: Rotavirus, norovirus.
  • Vector-Borne Viruses: Dengue, chikungunya, Zika.
  • Other Viruses: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), measles, and others.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the virus but commonly include:

  • Fever: Mild to high-grade.
  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • Body aches or joint pain.
  • Chills or shivering.
  • Headache.
  • Runny nose or congestion.
  • Sore throat or cough.
  • Skin rash (in certain viral infections like dengue or measles).
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Diagnosis

  1. Clinical History:
    • Onset, duration, and associated symptoms.
    • Recent travel or exposure to infected individuals.
  2. Physical Examination:
    • Checking for rashes, throat redness, swollen lymph nodes, etc.
  3. Lab Tests (if needed):
    • Blood tests: To identify specific viral infections (e.g., dengue NS1 antigen, influenza tests).
    • Complete blood count (CBC): May show low white blood cells or platelets in certain viral fevers.
    • PCR tests: For precise viral identification.

Treatment

Medications:

    • Viral fever can be treated successfully & harmlessly with Homoeopathic medicines
  1. Hydration:
    • Drink plenty of fluids (water, oral rehydration salts, soups) to prevent dehydration.
  2. Rest:
    • Adequate rest to help the body recover.
  3. Avoid Antibiotics:
    • Viral fevers do not respond to antibiotics unless there's a secondary bacterial infection.

Home Remedies

  • Ginger tea or turmeric milk for soothing sore throats.
  • Honey and lemon for cough relief.
  • Cool compress on the forehead to reduce fever.
  • Steam inhalation for nasal congestion.

Prevention

  1. Good Hygiene:
    • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
    • Avoid touching your face, especially eyes, nose, and mouth.
  2. Avoid Mosquito Bites:
    • Use insect repellents, mosquito nets, and eliminate stagnant water to prevent dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.
  3. Stay Hydrated and maintain a nutritious diet to boost immunity.
  4. Avoid Contact:
    • Stay away from infected individuals to reduce transmission.

When to See a Doctor

  • Fever persists beyond 3–5 days.
  • High-grade fever (>102°F or 39°C).
  • Severe symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or confusion.
  • Rash, persistent vomiting, or severe abdominal pain.
  • Signs of dehydration (e.g., dry mouth, reduced urination, or dizziness).
